PPL(困惑度)是衡量语言模型性能的一个常用指标,其基本思路如下:
语言模型对给定文本数据会计算每个词(或token)的概率。模型性能越好的话,它就会对真实出现的词给出较高的概率。
计算困惑度的过程通常是先求出整个验证集(或测试集)上每个词的对数似然值(即 log-probability),然后计算这些对数似然的平均值。公式通常写作:
perplexity = exp( - (1/N) * Σ log p(word) )
其中 N 是测试集中词的总数,p(word) 是模型预测该词出现的概率。
解释:
- 当困惑度较低时,说明模型在测试集上能够较好地预测实际出现的词汇(即模型对数据理解较好)。
- 当困惑度较高时,则说明模型对数据的预测能力较弱,它“困惑”于测试数据中的词汇选择。
因此,要衡量一个语言模型的PPL,你需要:
- 选择合适的测试数据集;
- 使用模型计算测试数据中每个词的概率,求出其对数对数似然;
- 求平均值后取指数,得到困惑度。
综合来看,PPL越低,通常说明模型的预测能力越好(尽管这并不一定等同于更高的实际应用性能),但值得注意的是,更低的困惑度通常会伴随着对计算资源的更高要求,例如更大的模型体积或更复杂的计算过程。
